The Lightkeepers of Joondalup

Step into your own real-world adventure! This self-guided, family-friendly treasure hunt will be transforming Joondalup City Centre from September 5th to November 1st.

Armed with a treasure map, players explore the city centre, solve puzzles and hunt for 10 hidden fireflies.

Activate all the firelies to uncover a secret final location, where successful adventurers can be initiated into the Lightkeepers Guild and receive a special prize.

The experience takes approximately 60-90 minutes, requires no app download and can be completed at your own pace.

Instructions for printing the map

For the best user experience ensure that you:

1. Recommended print size is A3
2. Print double sided (flipped on short edge)
3. Print in full colour

What is NFC? And does my phone have it?

NFC is built in to most smart phones today. If you use your phone to pay for things then you have NFC enabled.

The beacons utilize this same technology to direct you to a simple webpage containing text and images that tell the story.

Hold your phone above the beacon for up to 3 seconds to activate the NFC url and unlock the story to solve the puzzle.

How old do participants need to be?

The treasure hunt is suitable for the whole family. Children under age 12 may need help to solve. All minors must be supervised by a guardian.

What is the Lightkeepers of Joondalup?

The Lightkeepers of Joondalup is a self-guided puzzle adventure across Joondalup City Centre. Players receive a mysterious map filled with puzzles that lead them to hidden beacons around the city. Solve the clues, unlock the story, and you will discover the final solution that take you to a secret location to complete your mission.

When does the treasure hunt take place?

The treasure hunt is available to play anytime from September 5th to November 1st 2026.

Where does it take place?

The game takes place throughout Joondalup, Western Australia. All puzzle locations are within the Joondalup City Centre area and accessible on foot within a 500m radius of central walk.

Where do I start?

You can start anywhere within Joondalup. The treasure hunt is non-linear, meaning you can begin with any location shown on the map marked by a firefly. If you haven't printed your own copy of the map head to a participating pickup location to start.

How long does the treasure hunt take?

The treasure hunt should take approximately 60-90 minutes to complete, depending on how quickly players solve the puzzles. However the experience is designed to play at your own pace, so you can explore local businesses and make a day of it!

How do I get the map?

Click "get a map" to receive a downloadable A3 treasure map that will be instantly available for you to print and play. Make sure your printer can do A3 as smaller paper size may reduce legibility.

Do I need to print the map?

It is highly recommended you print the map or pick up a physical copy.

Some puzzles require drawing, writing, or marking clues directly on the map, which is much easier with a printed copy.

Can I play alone or in a team?

You can play solo or with friends and family. Many players choose to work together in small teams.

Is the treasure hunt family friendly?

Yes. The event is family-friendly and suitable for all ages, though younger players may need help solving some puzzles.

Do I need a phone to play?

A smartphone capable of NFC technology will be required to play the treasure hunt.

If you use your phone for "tap and pay" then your phone is NFC compatible. Refer to your system settings for NFC compatibility.

Do I need internet access?

Yes, your phone will be required to access the internet to play the media content needed to complete the map puzzles.

Will I need to enter buildings or businesses?

Only at the end to collect your prize. Our beacons are hidden outside, so you can start playing anytime, however, the final location is only accessible:
